Cover graphics of JVME are intended to attract the attention of
readers to the content of an issue. When the content is on a single
topic, the cover design is simplified, compared with the difficulty of
illustrating two disparate topics, as is the case for this issue. Graphic
artist Beth Mellor of Tufts University, Cummings School of Veterinary
Medicine and lead cover illustrator for several past issues of JVME,
has once again pulled together the pictorial essence of papers
decrying the continued shortage of veterinarians engaged in food-animal
medicine and biomedical research. Sadly, these are not new
concerns. In spite of this recurring theme in the professional
conversation and in previous papers published in JVME, apparently
little has changed since the 1970s when I became acutely aware of
the problem because of difficulty attracting trainees in laboratory-animal
medicine. This drum beat of concern will and should continue
until solutions are identified and implemented. JVME challenges its
readership to submit manuscripts outlining creative solutions to this
problem! This Editor welcomes any and all responses.
