The cover painting titled “The Lost Playmate” is a poignant expression of the human–animal bond, a topic featured in this issue. In fact, the powerful story of devotion expressed in this image reminds us of the strength of the animal–human bond. The original painting by Gustave Henry Mosler (1875–1906) was published as a lithograph by Raphael Tuck and Sons in the Century Magazine (1903). Because of poor paper quality, few copies of the original print remain. The cover is a photograph by Maury Matthews of an oil painting by S.A. Farwell, commissioned by Dr. Henry Baker for his private collection. The inside front cover illustrates a series of papers that describe The Royal Veterinary College’s LIVE Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. LIVE stands for Lifelong and Independent Veterinary Education. The RVC faculty are justifiably proud of the investment made in this unique center designed to support veterinary teaching and learning with associated research. Their hope and expectation is that other colleges of veterinary medicine will be stimulated to create programs emulating their model which, in it short existence, has made substantial progress in meeting its worthy goals.
