Public-Health Training for Veterinarians

Partnerships for Preparedness: Future Directions for Schools of Public Health and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine

Jay F. Levine, Guest EditorHenry J. Baker, Editor-in-Chief

This issue of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME) includes a series of articles embracing our profession's efforts to enhance veterinary training in public-health practice. Heightened societal awareness of zoonoses and the varied roles veterinarians play as public-health practitioners have enhanced efforts to ensure that all graduate veterinarians understand their professional responsibilities and commitment to public health. The need for veterinarians to work more closely with our human medical colleagues provided the motivation for Partnerships for Preparedness: Future Directions for Schools of Public Health and Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, a symposium held at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in April 2007.

This issue of the JVME and a companion issue of Public Health Reports compile the plenary sessions that guided cooperative discussions and planning at the workshop. In addition, manuscripts published in these companion issues provide a catalog of programs and public-health training activities that future veterinarians and graduate veterinarians can pursue to enhance their preparation for service-oriented careers in public health.

The full table of contents for the companion issue of Public Health Reports (PHR) is reprinted here and, reciprocally, the JVME table of contents for the public-health papers in this issue has been printed in PHR. Readers of JVME are invited to access all papers published in the PHR online at <http://www.publichealthreports.org>. The JVME's public health issue (35:2) has also been made available online to the readers of PHR. The joint sponsorship of the symposium and reciprocal access to the published manuscripts is a first step toward realization of the public-health partnership that was the predominant premise of symposium participants.
